“That’s what life is all about: let’s have a party. Let’s have it tonight.” – Lilly Pulitzer; Kunstschatzi
Sometimes there are those evenings in Vienna that don’t feel like Vienna at all. Not like everyday life. Not like „let’s go for a drink.“ But like… a little secret.
Art Treasure was one of those evenings. I think we need to start at the very beginning. Not with the outfit. Not with the museum. But with that one moment at 1 a.m. when I’m sitting there thinking: „Why am I doing this?“ For Kunstschatzi. Because getting tickets for Kunstschatzi… is no fun. It’s a bit of a struggle. First, there are the tickets for everyone who has an annual pass for the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna—a kind of VIP early access. And then?
Chaos. Be quick. Get lucky. And I was really awake. Refresh. Refresh again. And then suddenly: ticket. Honestly—that alone made Kunstschatzi worth it.
What do I love about it? It simply doesn’t fit into any category. Tuesday. Not Friday. Not Saturday. Tuesday. And that’s exactly what makes Kunstschatzi so special. Because it doesn’t follow any rules. An after-work event that suddenly feels like a little parallel world. And that’s precisely what it is – a mix of art, drinks, music, and that very own Viennese vibe.
Arrive and queue
– briefly be the main character
So we arrive. My husband and I. In front of us: a queue. Behind us: people who look like they’ve put a lot of thought into it. And I love that. Kunstschatzi isn’t an event you just „drop in on.“ You can tell right away: people want to be there. Then my best friend joined us. And sure enough—not a minute later, we’re let in. I was briefly confused. Because I was already mentally prepared for „okay, we’re going to be standing here forever.“
But no. Kunstschatzi is organized. Very organized, in fact. After ticket control: cloakroom. And I just have to say this—I love it when things are well thought out. And Kunstschatzi is well thought out. Lockers. No endless waiting. No awkward „where’s my jacket?“. Just walk in, lock it, and you’re done.
And me? Of course I had shoes with me. Because, yes – I love high heels. But I don’t love wearing them around Vienna. So: bag open, shoes in, change later. Smart girl move. Also very arts, like Kunstschatzi.
Outfit check
& that certain something
The dress code at Kunstschatzi is… anything and nothing. And that’s exactly what makes it exciting. Many were really elegant. All dressed up. Others were more casual. But most? They made an effort. And I think that’s appropriate. I mean… we’re in the Kunsthistorisches Museum (art historical museum). In a building that already has more drama than any event in Vienna.
I wore a dark brown, sequined midi dress from Zara. And this dress just… worked in the light. This indirect, warm light in the museum— it made everything a bit more mystical. And that’s exactly what Kunstschatzi is.
At Kunstschatzi, you can be a little more daring. For women, flowing midi dresses, satin, sequins, or an elegant two-piece suit with heels work perfectly – anything that shimmers in the light. Men are right on target with well-cut suits, a shirt and jacket, or a modern smart-casual look. The key is that certain something: a special detail, a striking fabric, or a look that says – I’ve put some thought into it.
The most beautiful party location
(no discussion)
Let me tell you how it is: Kunstschatzi is the most beautiful place to go out in Vienna. Period. This building. This dome. This architecture. The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna isn’t just a museum—it’s an experience. And then you’re standing there with a drink in your hand…and you think to yourself: „How can this actually be real?“ Kunstschatzi makes exactly that possible.
And this feeling is hard to describe if you haven’t experienced it yourself. It’s this interplay of history and the present, of elegance and lightness. You look up, see these imposing ceilings, and at the same time you hear music, feel the energy in the room. It’s almost surreal. As if Vienna is showing, for a few hours, just how beautiful it can be when you simply combine tradition and lifestyle.
In the middle—where the café usually is—there were bars set up. Several of them. And of course… we immediately got something to drink. Cocktails in a museum. I repeat: Cocktails. In a museum. This event really does transform the domed hall into a bar with DJs and a dance floor. But this mix of old and new is simply stunning. At least in my opinion. And suddenly you’re standing there, not knowing whether to dance or look at a painting.
Spoiler alert: You do both.
Art everywhere
but with personality
After a short speech, we were off.
You could explore the exhibition – with a guided tour or on your own. Guided tours start every 30 minutes, but honestly: we’re on Team „just go for it.“ And if you know me, you know: We’re the worst commentators. We wander through museums and talk. Comment. Interpret things that are probably completely wrong. But that’s exactly what I love. Because Kunstschatzi gives you this feeling that art doesn’t have to be stiff.
And that’s precisely where something exciting happens. You don’t just look – you experience. You linger longer in front of a painting because you suddenly invent your own story about it. You laugh, discuss, reflect – all at once. It takes away the rigidity of that whole „museum = be quiet and don’t touch anything“ feeling and makes it somehow more accessible. And I think that’s the most beautiful thing about it: that you don’t just admire art, but feel it in your own unique way.
And then…we turn the corner. And there it is. A picture of Schloss Hof. My wedding venue. I swear – I got a little emotional. Of course, I immediately took a photo. And probably five more. I think I took countless pictures and videos that evening. But that’s exactly what Kunstschatzi is for. Collecting moments.
Coincidences
that are not coincidences
Back at the bar. Drinks. Music. Conversation. And then I suddenly get a message from a friend. With a picture. The same picture. Schloss Hof. And I’m like: „Wait a minute… are you here too? And yes. She was. At an event like Kunstschatzi, where it’s practically impossible to get tickets. If that’s not a coincidence, I don’t know what is. So we met at the bar and all spent the rest of the evening together.
Towards the end, it somehow became… more intense.
Fewer people. More atmosphere. Everyone got up at some point. Everyone was dancing. That feeling of: „Okay, we have to work tomorrow… but right now, who cares?“ And that’s exactly what Kunstschatzi is. It goes from 7 pm to 11 pm – short, intense, perfect. And us? We were among the last to leave. Of course.
And it’s precisely in those last few minutes that something truly special happens. The energy shifts – in the best possible way. Strangers smile at each other, you’re suddenly dancing next to each other without knowing each other, and somehow everything feels lighter. No big clubbing, no pressure – just music, space, and that moment. Maybe that’s exactly what makes Kunstschatzi so special: those short, intense moments that linger long after the evening is over.
What Kunstschatzi actually is
(and why it’s an insider)
If I had to explain Kunstschatzi to someone, I’d say: It’s not an event. It’s a hidden gem. An after-work event that takes place every few weeks and brings together art, music, drinks, and people. But at the same time, Kunstschatzi is more than that. It’s that feeling of being part of something that not everyone knows about. Even many Viennese don’t know about Kunstschatzi. And that’s precisely why… it’s a true insider tip.
What makes Kunstschatzi so special is this mix of apparent opposites. You move through venerable spaces, past centuries-old art—and at the same time, somewhere a DJ set is playing, people are clinking cocktails and laughing. It feels a bit like stepping into a world that’s otherwise closed off. No tourist crowds, no typical museum visit, but an evening that deliberately feels different.
Perhaps that’s precisely the appeal of Kunstschatzi: you have to know about it, you have to want it – and sometimes a bit of luck to be a part of it. It’s not loudly advertised, not ubiquitous. And that’s exactly why people spread the word. Like a great ad you almost want to keep to yourself.
my summary
Would I go again?
The question is wrong. The right question is: When again? Kunstschatzi is one of those things you don’t just experience once. Because every evening is different. Every theme is different. And every time it remains a little bit special.
And honestly?
I think that’s exactly the feeling that lingers—that slight tingle when you think back to strolling through those rooms, drink in hand, somewhere between art and music. It’s not an evening you simply check off your list. It’s one you share with others. One you want to relive.
I’ll stay up again for the next ticket sale.
With my laptop. With my credit card. With way too much ambition. For my art-loving sweetheart.
