There are exactly two types of café visits for me.
The first is planned down to the last detail. I pick out the loveliest spots, save inspiration on Instagram, plan my outfit days in advance, and look forward to the perfect morning. And then there’s the second kind. I like that one even more, almost. You’re just walking through Vienna with no real plans, stumble upon a charming coffee shop, and think: „Come on, let’s just go in.“
That’s exactly how my husband and I ended up at Bert coffee. And sometimes, those spontaneous decisions are the best ones of all.

We were really just taking a leisurely stroll through Vienna’s city center. No rush. No plan.
Just wandering through the narrow streets, looking in shop windows, and enjoying what I think Vienna does best: that unique blend of history, elegance, and those little spots you only discover when you aren’t actively looking for them. As we strolled along, a small café suddenly caught our eye. Not huge. Not loud. Not overly staged. Just the kind of place that makes you slow down instinctively.
The large windows, the simple façade, and the people standing out front in the sunshine with their iced drinks made us want to take a quick break right away. “Shall we?” my husband asked. Honestly, it didn’t take much more persuasion than that. A few minutes later, we were already standing at the counter at Bert coffee.

The first thing that immediately caught my eye?
Just how small the café actually is. And that is exactly what gives it its charm. Not every coffee shop needs huge seating areas, massive counters, or twenty different rooms. Sometimes, just a few seats, good lighting, and an atmosphere that makes you feel instantly welcome are enough. Nothing about Bert coffee feels artificial. Everything feels modern without being cold. Minimalist, yet cozy. The décor relies on light colors, natural materials, and that relaxed vibe that defines so many of today’s loveliest cafés.
It’s one of those places where you instantly understand why people suddenly prefer to drink their coffee-to-go right outside the shop instead of walking on. You simply want to stay a little longer. During our visit, I also noticed the variety of guests. Some stopped by with their laptops to get some work done. Others just grabbed a quick coffee. Still others sat outside together, chatting and simply enjoying the afternoon. I like cafés like that. They don’t feel like tourist attractions. Instead, they feel like a little neighborhood hangout right in the middle of the city.

Of course, I had to order a matcha.
Anyone who has been reading my blog posts for a while probably knows that I now enjoy drinking matcha just as much as coffee. Especially in the summer. So, I opted for an iced matcha latte. It was visually stunning, too. That vibrant green combined with the pale milk always looks so elegant. It’s no wonder that matcha has become one of the most photographed drinks around. But looking good isn’t enough on its own, of course.
I was really pleasantly surprised by the taste. The matcha was pleasantly intense but lacked any unpleasant bitterness. That is something not every café manages to get right, unfortunately. Often, matcha tastes either too watery or far too astringent. Here, the balance was spot on.
My husband, on the other hand, opted for an Iced Protein Americano.
The name alone piqued both our curiosity. A classic Americano with protein? It certainly sounded like something different. Naturally, I had to try it too. And I have to be honest: I wouldn’t have expected coffee and protein to go so well together. The drink was pleasantly refreshing and didn’t taste artificial at all. I found this combination really interesting—especially if you’re on the go after a workout or simply want to try something new. I love cafés that feature creative ideas on their menu alongside the classics. After all, that’s exactly what makes them memorable. And that is precisely why, in my opinion, Bert Coffee stands out from so many other coffee shops in Vienna.

Even though the café was really busy, everything moved incredibly fast. No chaotic scramble. No stressed atmosphere. No long waits. The young women behind the counter worked with incredible efficiency. Every movement was precise and practiced. While one was already preparing the next matcha, the other was getting coffee specialties ready and taking new orders at the same time. It looked almost like a well-rehearsed dance.
I think it’s exactly these kinds of little details that define a café visit. Of course, you remember good coffee. But you also remember the welcome you received and the atmosphere in the café. At Bert Coffee, I simply got the feeling that everyone enjoyed their job. And that positive energy automatically rubs off on the guests. You feel welcome. Not because someone is trying to be overly friendly.
But simply because everything feels pleasantly relaxed.

Definitely the cookies
But now we come to the point I’ll probably be talking about for weeks to come.
The cookies.
I’m a huge fan of cookies in general. Whenever I spot a good cookie somewhere, I simply have to try it. And I have to honestly admit: Up until now, I’ve always felt that the Starbucks cookie was pretty hard to beat. It was sort of my little go-to classic. Whenever I was in the mood for something sweet, I usually knew exactly what I’d order. Well. Until that day.
Because we decided, quite spontaneously, to grab a cookie at Bert Coffee. Without any real expectations, really. More along the lines of: „Oh, why not? That looks good.“ And that was probably our biggest mistake. Because ever since that first bite, we automatically compare every other cookie to that one.
Why small cafés

I keep finding that it’s the small cafés that truly delight me.
Perhaps it’s because everything feels a bit more personal there. It’s not about serving as many people as possible at once or constantly dreaming up new trends. Instead, the focus is on the essentials. Quality products. A friendly team. And an atmosphere that makes you want to linger for a few extra minutes. That’s exactly the feeling I got at Bert coffee. Of course, the café isn’t huge.
If you’re looking for a place where a large group can sit for hours, you’ll likely find other options better suited to that. But that size is precisely what gives it its charm. It feels almost like a little insider tip right in the heart of Vienna. A place where you can briefly escape the hustle and bustle, even as hundreds of people walk by outside. I’ve always felt that Vienna thrives on exactly these kinds of spots. On the small cafés you discover more or less by chance. On the people behind the counter who greet every guest with the same friendliness. And on products that not only look good but also taste amazing.

A really good drink. A cookie you’re still talking about days later. A friendly team and a relaxed atmosphere. That’s exactly what defines Bert coffee for me. The café is on the smaller side, but that’s precisely what gives it such a personal, cozy feel. The women behind the counter work incredibly fast, yet with a calm assurance that shows they’ve truly mastered every move. My iced matcha latte was wonderfully balanced, my husband’s iced protein Americano was a pleasant surprise for both of us, and I could probably write an entire blog post just about the cookies.
Honestly, I never thought I’d voluntarily say that a cookie could excite me more than my longtime favorite from Starbucks. But that’s exactly what happened.
Ever since our visit to Bert coffee, we automatically compare every other cookie to that one—and so far, nothing else has measured up.
So, if you’re looking for a modern coffee shop in Vienna that impresses with quality rather than size, you should definitely give this little café a try. Sometimes, it’s the spontaneous stops that stay with you the longest.
