„Girl dinner: a little bit of this, a little bit oft hat and no cooking required“.; Cafe Bel Etage
There are places in Vienna that you carry around in your mind for what feels like months. You walk past them, see photos of them, and file them away somewhere between „I absolutely have to do that“ and „Someday.“ And that’s exactly the kind of place that Cafe Bel Etage in the Hotel Sacher was for me.
Cafe Bel Etage had been on my list for so long. Perhaps it’s because it exudes that classic Viennese elegance that I’m currently loving so much. That blend of history, glamour, and that feeling of simply dressing up a bit more than usual. And that’s precisely what we did. I went there with my mom. And if I’m honest—evenings like that always seem to happen spontaneously with us, but they still end up being particularly memorable.
We’d both dressed up really nicely. Hair styled, beautiful outfits, jewelry, perfume—you know the drill. That „we’re going somewhere today“ feeling. And of course, the plan was to take some photos outside beforehand. Well. What does Vienna do? Sudden snowfall. Not that romantic „a few flakes“ of snow. No. Real snow. Cold. Wet. Chaos.
Photos outside? Completely impossible. So, laughing, we walked towards the Hotel Sacher, half freezing, half annoyed—but still with that anticipation of finally going into Café Bel Etage. The entrance, by the way, is on the side of the famous Hotel Sacher—a small detail I hadn’t known before. You immediately feel a bit more „insider“ when you avoid the main tourist crowds.
Walk into the Hotel Sacher
— and be treated like a VIP
When we walked in, there were a few people ahead of us. For a moment, I thought: Okay, this is going to be complicated without a reservation. But you know me—I simply went up to the waiter and asked if he had room for two. And he was incredibly friendly. Not that stiff, fancy-hotel friendliness, but genuinely warm. He immediately said he’d check—and offered us a table by the window right away. Our first table at Cafe Bel etage.
I love window seats. Always. But. It was already evening, we were hungry, and we really wanted to order beef tartare. And that’s where the little twist came in: It was only available on the first floor. No problem at all. I was actually quite pleased, because I was curious to see what Cafe Bel etage looked like upstairs anyway.
Once we arrived upstairs, we were greeted by the next waiter. Again, incredibly friendly and attentive. He offered us another window seat—this time a bit smaller, but still beautiful. Our second table at Cafe Bel Etage.
Before ordering, we naturally took the opportunity to snap some photos. You know, priorities. And then came that moment I only ever experience with my mom: The waiter came back—and said he’d found an even better table for us if we wanted. Our third table at Cafe Bel Etage. We laughed so hard. Three tables in one evening. But it’s precisely these little moments that make experiences special for me. And honestly, the service at Cafe Bel Etage was consistently attentive, warm, and relaxed. Not a trace of the arrogance you sometimes expect at iconic locations.
Three tables, two women and an evening
that somehow just kept getting better
Drinks were quickly decided. Me: Aperol Spritz. What else? My mom: Orange juice.
And I have to tell you something—that Aperol at Cafe Bel Etage packed a punch. Visually, it was totally subtle. Almost innocent. But after the first sip, I looked at my mom and said, „I think they forgot the Prosecco…“ Because it was so strong. We laughed so hard. But I love that. When a drink not only looks pretty but also packs a punch.
We both ordered the beef tartare. And I can honestly say: I’ve never had anything like it.
It was with pumpkin and a buttermilk foam (at least I think that’s what it was). A combination I never would have expected—but it was incredibly good. Light. Fresh. And yet extremely satisfying. I really struggled with the last few bites, even though I was absolutely starving. It came with crusty, homemade bread. Now that’s what I call a „girls‘ night in“ at Cafe Bel Etage. Elegant, special, yet cozy.
conversations with Mom are therapy
and gossip, and future planning
And then came the best part of the evening. We just talked. About everything. What’s going on in our lives. What’s on our minds. What’s annoying us. What’s worrying us. What makes us happy. About plans. About memories.
And of course, about our vacation together this year. Hint: It starts with „R“ and ends with „om.“ Conversations like that always feel like an emotional reset. And that’s exactly why the evening at Cafe bel etage was so much more than just „going out for dinner“ for me. It was time together.
A place steeped in history:
Why you’re actually sitting amidst Viennese legends
What many might not know: Café bel etage is located in the famous Hotel Sacher, one of Vienna’s most traditional hotels. The hotel opened in the 19th century and is world-renowned for its Original Sacher-Torte.
And here’s my favorite fun fact:
The Sachertorte was invented in 1832 by Franz Sacher—at the time, he was only 16 years old and an apprentice. He had to spontaneously create a dessert for Prince Metternich because the head chef was ill. A 16-year-old apprentice. And from this came one of the most famous desserts in the world.
Even more fascinating:
For decades, there was a legal battle between the Hotel Sacher and the Demel confectionery over who sold the „real“ Sachertorte. In the end, it was decided: Only the hotel could call it the „Original Sacher-Torte“—with the round chocolate seal on top.
I think stories like these stick in your mind. And they give a visit to Café bel etage a whole new meaning. You’re not just sitting anywhere. You’re sitting right in the middle of Viennese history.
This atmosphere cannot be staged
— it simply happens
The rooms at Cafe bel etage are elegant, classic, and yet cozy.
High ceilings. Warm colors. Fine fabrics. Large windows. You immediately feel a bit more „Viennese.“ Not touristy. But sophisticated. It’s exactly this Viennese chic that I’m currently loving. If you ask me: For everyone who wants to experience Vienna without the stress. For dates. For mother-daughter time. For girlfriends. For special afternoons. Or simply for a moment to treat yourself.
When you visit Cafe bel etage, take your time. Don’t rush. Stay seated. Order something else. Enjoy the atmosphere.
my summary
– some evenings immediately feel like memories of
My conclusion about Cafe bel etage is quite clear: I’ll be back. Not just for the food. Not just for the drinks. But for that feeling. That „We’ve dressed up and are going somewhere.“ That „We’re sitting there talking about everything.“ That „Vienna can be so elegant.“ I think that’s exactly why I love places like this. An evening that stays with you.
In the end, we went back out into the snow, full, happy, and a little tipsy from the Aperol. We didn’t get the photos we’d like outside. But we did get memories. And that’s worth more anyway. I already know: I’ll go back to Cafe bel etage. Maybe with my mom again. Maybe with friends. Maybe after an event. But definitely again. Because some places feel familiar the first time you visit.
And that’s exactly how it was at Cafe bel etage.
