„There is room in the smallest cottage for a happy loving pair.“ -Friedrich Schiller, Das Cottage
If you’re looking for a unique café in Vienna, you should definitely put „Das Cottage“ on your list. Tucked away in the idyllic Cottage Quarter of the 19th district, this café is a true insider tip for anyone who loves a cozy ambiance, high-quality ingredients, and creative breakfast creations.
Although „das Cottage“ is located in the rather quiet 19th district, it’s easily accessible by public transportation. However, you should check the route carefully beforehand, as the café’s location is higher than you’d initially expect. But that’s typical of this upscale neighborhood. From the outside, „das Cottage“ appears to be more of an unassuming café, with very subdued colors like gray. But inside, a pleasant surprise awaits…

An ambience to feel good
As soon as you enter, you’ll sense the special atmosphere: plenty of natural light, lovingly crafted details in the decor, and a charming blend of vintage and modern. The large windows let the sun shine in, while you make yourself comfortable at the stylishly set tables. And those who prefer to sit outside can make themselves comfortable in the lovely garden – perfect for sunny mornings.
“ … cozy, natural atmosphere. „
No wonder the place was so busy. We were there on a Friday around lunchtime, and it was almost completely full. This suggests that the cafe is very well-known, at least in the area. A lot of effort is put into creating a cozy, natural atmosphere. You really feel like you’re in a little hideaway.
As mentioned earlier, regional ingredients are now a standard that almost every restaurant meets, and this one is no exception. What’s particularly cool is that no artificial additives or flavor enhancers are used—everything is fresh, regional, and homemade. The bread comes from the renowned Potocnik bakery, the eggs are organic, and the ham is from the well-known producer Thum.

Breakfast all day – a dream!
Whether you’re an early riser or more of a „brunch is lunch“ type, breakfast is available all day. The menu leaves nothing to be desired, offering both classics and unusual creations, at „das cottage“. Personally, I’m more of a classic breakfast person, so it wasn’t a big surprise what we ordered. We had the Egg Hemingway, consisting of smoked salmon, fresh avocado, and poached eggs on an English muffin with hollandaise sauce. We also ordered the relaxed breakfast, consisting of ham, cheese, egg, Bircher muesli, pastries, and jam.
If, like me, you can’t pass the display case of sweet delicacies, you should definitely try the homemade pastries. The in-house patisserie conjures up new treats every day, perfect with a coffee. So it goes without saying that we also ordered the Nutella banana pancakes. They not only looked good, they tasted good too.
In addition to breakfast options, there’s also a weekly changing lunch menu with seasonal dishes. The prices are fair, the quality is top-notch, and the offerings range from creative vegetarian dishes to classic meat dishes. A particularly popular dish is „The Legendary Cauliflower,“ with beetroot hummus, pomegranate seeds, and coriander—perfect for those who prefer plant-based options.

My summary
„Das Cottage“ is one of those cafés that you visit once and immediately fall in love with. Perfect for long breakfast dates, cozy afternoons with cake, or a relaxed lunch with friends. Everything is just right here: quality, atmosphere, and attention to detail.
The service is fast and friendly. We were served fairly quickly, even though the restaurant was so busy. One thing I have to mention, though, is that it can get a bit noisy inside with all the people.
So: definitely try it and enjoy!
