„There are times breakfast seems the one thing getting up.“; Motto am Fluss
There are places in Vienna that simply everyone knows.
You don’t even have to have been there to instantly picture the scene: the large terrace by the Danube Canal; people in sunglasses; Aperol in hand; tourists with cameras; locals telling themselves they’re just stopping by briefly for a coffee. And somewhere in between, the feeling that this is exactly where you want to be when the sun is shining over the city. Motto am Fluss is one of those places.
A restaurant that has ranked among the city’s most famous spots for years. A place that appears on countless postcards, Instagram photos, and in travel guides. A place many automatically associate with summer in Vienna. But what is a visit actually like these days? Is Motto am Fluss still one of the best places for brunch in Vienna, or is the restaurant now mainly living off its reputation? That is exactly what I wanted to find out.
Motto am Fluss
– a Viennese classic on the Danube Canal
There isn’t really much need to explain Motto am Fluss to anyone in Vienna.
The restaurant is located right by the Danube Canal and has been one of the city’s most famous spots for years. Whether you live in Vienna or are just visiting for the weekend, sooner or later you almost inevitably end up at Motto am Fluss. I’ve been there many times myself. Sometimes for brunch, sometimes for dinner, and at other times just for a coffee or a quick snack. A few years ago, in particular, Motto am Fluss held a very special place for me.
It was modern. It was urban. It had that signature Vienna lifestyle vibe—the kind you didn’t find on every street corner back then. But restaurants change. Cities change. And sometimes, the way you see a place changes, too. That’s why my husband and I wanted to give this classic another chance.
For a relaxed Sunday brunch in Vienna. At least, that was the plan.
A spontaneous brunch
– in 35-degree heat
It seems Vienna has set out to slowly roast us all this year.
The heatwave currently sweeping through the city is no joke. By mid-morning, temperatures had already reached the point where all you want is shade, ice cubes, and air-conditioned rooms. Even so, one Sunday morning, my husband and I spontaneously decided to go for brunch at Motto am Fluss. No reservation. No planning. Just spontaneous. Exactly the way you sometimes like a relaxed brunch best.
When we arrived at Motto am Fluss, it was already bustling. No wonder—after all, the terrace is one of the most famous spots in Vienna. The view of the Danube Canal remains stunning. You’re sitting right in the middle of the city, yet you still feel like you’re getting a bit of distance from the hustle and bustle. At least in theory.
The first thing we noticed at Motto am Fluss, however, had nothing to do with the food. It was the sun. Or rather, the lack of protection from it. Since we didn’t have a reservation, the only available tables were fully exposed to the blazing sun. No parasols. No shade. No way to escape the heat. Of course, one could argue that walk-in guests simply have to take what’s left. I understand that, in principle.
Still, I felt that Motto am Fluss could really use a lot more parasols. Especially with the temperatures currently prevailing in Vienna. We briefly considered leaving. But the location of Motto am Fluss is simply beautiful. So, we decided to stay. Perhaps the brunch would make up for it all.
The start
was promising
On the plus side, we were seated relatively quickly.
Our initial order was also taken promptly. It was exactly the sort of thing you’d want for a relaxed brunch. I had originally been in the mood for a matcha. Unfortunately, they had run out. I found that a bit surprising for a restaurant of this size and renown, but oh well. It happens. So, we opted for two iced lattes instead. Plus a summer lemonade. Stay hydrated. Especially in this Vienna heat. The drinks arrived quite quickly and made a good impression. We sat back and looked forward to our brunch at Motto am Fluss. Little did we know at that point that the real trouble was just about to begin.
For our meal, we opted for two classic dishes.
My husband ordered ham and eggs—three eggs and a slice of ham. I chose the scrambled egg toast with salmon and honey mustard. It was exactly the kind of food I enjoy for brunch. Not too heavy. Not too complicated. Just solid breakfast fare. We briefly considered sharing something sweet. A croissant. A piece of cake. Something for afterwards. But we decided to make that call once the food arrived. A thought that would later prove to be optimistic.
Anyone who knows me knows that I visit a great many restaurants in Vienna these days—ranging from small cafés to fine-dining establishments. And the truly good restaurants all have one thing in common: They understand atmosphere. They understand timing. They understand why people go out for brunch on a Sunday. No one wants stress. No one wants a hectic rush. You simply want to unwind. That is precisely why the situation at Motto am Fluss struck us so negatively. Because after our order was taken, nothing happened at first. And I mean absolutely nothing.
We waited. And waited. And waited. For more than 40 minutes. For breakfast. At brunch. To top it off, we didn’t even get any cutlery. The waitress who had taken our order didn’t come back a single time. No quick update. No checking in. No information. Nothing at all.
When no one is responsible
At some point, we decided to speak to another staff member. Perhaps there was a problem in the kitchen. Perhaps something had gone missing. Perhaps there had simply been a mistake. However, the reaction took us by surprise.
The staff member seemed completely overwhelmed. She could neither tell us when the food would arrive nor offer any real assistance. It felt as though no one was truly in charge. And that is a real shame. After all, good service doesn’t mean that mistakes never happen. Good service is about how you handle those mistakes. I would have expected something different, especially from a restaurant like Motto am Fluss. Particularly given that the competition in Vienna has become incredibly fierce.
Eventually, our food finally arrived. And to be fair:
It was hot. It looked good. And it tasted decent, too.
The scrambled egg toast with salmon was solid. The combination of egg, honey mustard, and salmon worked well. My husband’s ham and eggs were also perfectly fine in terms of taste. The only problem was: After a wait of over 40 minutes, you automatically judge food differently. Because at a certain point, it’s no longer just about the taste. It’s about the overall experience. And that is precisely where Motto am Fluss struggled that day.
The view
remains stunning
We have to be fair. The location of Motto am Fluss remains fantastic. The view of the Danube Canal is one of the finest in Vienna.
Especially in summer, the spot captures that special urban vibe so many people love about Vienna. As the sun slowly sets. As the boats drift by. As the city grows a little quieter. For that alone, a visit to Motto am Fluss is definitely still worth it. The setting works. The architecture works. The atmosphere could work.
The real low point, however, came right at the end.
When paying the bill. We were asked if we wanted to leave a tip. In principle, a perfectly normal question. We politely explained why we had decided against it this time. The long wait. The missing cutlery. The lack of service. The poor communication. Instead of an apology, the only response was that the staff member didn’t care. And that was the moment that stuck with us the most. Not the wait. Not the heat. Not the food. But the fact that our criticism apparently sparked no interest whatsoever. Yet a simple: „We’re sorry.“ would have been quite enough.
my summary
on the Motto am Fluss brunch in Vienna
Would I go back to Motto am Fluss for brunch?
Maybe. Or maybe not.
But not with the same expectations I used to have. Motto am Fluss relies on one thing above all else these days: Its extraordinary location. The view is beautiful. The setting is iconic. The terrace remains one of the most famous spots in Vienna. But a restaurant is about more than just a view. A good brunch also requires attention. Service. Hospitality. A sense of being welcome. That is precisely the feeling we missed at Motto am Fluss this time around.
Perhaps we were just unlucky. Perhaps it was simply a bad day. Perhaps you’ll have a completely different brunch experience there. However, my personal impression was that Motto am Fluss feels much more touristy now than it used to.
While many restaurants in Vienna have evolved, Motto am Fluss seems to have stood still a bit. The view is still beautiful. The name is still well-known. But sometimes, that alone is no longer enough. And that is precisely why I left Motto am Fluss with mixed feelings this time. Not disappointed. But not thrilled, either. A place I used to love.
And one I hope will someday become what it once was for so many people in Vienna: a real highlight for a special brunch.
