Experience Vienna from the old money side – VaniVanity
Who hasn’t wanted to feel like a princess at least once?
Not loud, not extravagant – but in that quiet, understated way where everything just seems a little more elegant. That’s exactly the feeling I had in mind when I started putting together my perfect old money Vienna day. A day that doesn’t follow trends, but rather the mood. A day filled with moments that linger. There are days in Vienna that feel different. Quieter. More profound. More elegant. Not because anything special happens – but because everything unfolds exactly as it has for decades.
The Silent Spa (as a Part of the Therma Laa) has its own entrance area. To the right of the main entrance area to the general thermal bath of Therme Laa, a small, discreet arrow shows the way. From the outside the spa looks very practical and clean, but as soon as you enter the reception you find yourself somewhere completely different. The rooms are all kept rather dark with lots of stone, indirect lighting and different materials that give the room some structure. This concept runs through the entire thermal baths. A touch of gold and geometric patterns give it something luxurious – almost Dior-like.
A morning
that tastes of tradition
The day begins at Café Landtmann.
Even before you arrive, you can feel it. This facade. These windows. This tranquility. Inside, it’s warm, subdued, almost golden. Waiters in black vests move as if they’ve been doing it all their lives. Conversations that aren’t loud, but simply present. This coffeehouse has been around since 1873 – and you can feel it in every corner. I usually sit by the window. I order a classic breakfast, a coffee – and stay.
Longer than planned. Because that’s exactly the point. In old money Vienna, you stay. You don’t rush. You don’t constantly check your phone. You’re simply there. And while Vienna slowly wakes up outside, everything feels as if it’s never changed. That’s my first moment of old money Vienna.
Lunch time
that feels like a ritual
At lunchtime, I head to Plachutta Wollzeile.
It’s one of those places where you immediately know what to expect – and that’s precisely its luxury. White tablecloths. Silver cutlery. A service that doesn’t try to be modern. This isn’t about trends. This is about things that work.
The famous Tafelspitz isn’t just a dish – it’s a piece of Viennese identity.
I love how everything unfolds.
The way the meat is served, the way the side dishes arrive, how nothing is left to chance. And right here I understand again what old money vienna really means: It’s not about inventing something new. It’s about doing something so well that it endures. And Plachutta is exactly that. A place that isn’t loud. But unforgettable. Another moment of old money vienna.
A coffee
that takes longer than planned
In the afternoon, no plan is needed. Just a coffee. And I go to Café Central.
The high vaulted ceiling, the columns, that almost majestic feeling as soon as you enter—as if you become part of another time for a moment. Sitting. Observing. That feeling that time suddenly ceases to matter. For me, that’s the moment when old money Vienna becomes most apparent.
Not in luxury. But in the ease of it all.
You sit there, maybe order a second coffee, perhaps a piece of cake – and suddenly two hours have passed. Without stress. Without a destination. Simply because it feels right. And that’s precisely the kind of luxury that money can’t buy.
Perhaps it’s this very sense of history that hangs in the air. Conversations mingle with the soft clinking of porcelain, while outside, modern Vienna glides by – almost as if it doesn’t matter in here.
A dinner
that feels like a secret
In the evening, it gets quieter. I go to Mon Cher.
A place that doesn’t shout. Doesn’t stand out. But that’s precisely why it’s so special. It’s that feeling of „you have to know it.“ Dimmed lighting. Elegant plates. People who aren’t there to be seen—but to enjoy themselves. And it’s right here that the atmosphere changes.
The day slows down.
Conversations deepen. The glass of wine stays half full a little longer. For me, this is the moment when old money Vienna becomes almost tangible. Not loud. Not obvious. But simply there. And perhaps it is precisely this feeling of seclusion that makes the evening so special. No room for haste, no space for superficiality. Everything seems deliberately chosen – from the first sip to the last glance before leaving.
Cocktail hour
that prolongs the evening
And then—to be honest—I don’t want to go home yet.
So I continue on to Kleinod am Ring. The lights are dimmer. The voices are quieter. Everything feels a bit more private. A drink at the bar. Maybe a second And suddenly you’ve arrived at that exact moment that sums up this entire day.
That moment when you realize:
This is old money Vienna. Not perfect. Not staged. But exactly right. It’s that quiet pause between sips, that observing without wanting to be observed. Conversations mingle with the clinking of glasses, while time slips by almost unnoticed. No one rushes, no one looks at their watch. And therein lies its special magic – a feeling of freedom that seems so calm and natural, as if it had always been this way.
Why these places just feel right
because they feel right
I didn’t just choose these places because they’re beautiful.
But because they feel right. Every single spot on this list has that certain something you can’t plan. That feeling of consistency, of calm, of a world that doesn’t constantly have to reinvent itself to stay relevant. That’s exactly what old money Vienna is to me.
They’re places that don’t try to be modern—and that’s precisely why they’re timeless. Places where you don’t just eat or drink, but where you somehow automatically slow down. Become more mindful. More present.
And perhaps this is exactly the mix I was looking for: a day that doesn’t feel like a perfectly planned event, but rather like something that simply unfolds. Nevertheless, I already know that this is just the beginning. Vienna has so many corners, so many cafés, so many restaurants and bars that embody this very atmosphere. Quiet, elegant, almost a little hidden. And that’s precisely why this certainly won’t be my last old money Vienna food tour.
Rather, it’s the start of something I want to experience again and again.
my summary
and what remains
When I go home, I take nothing with me.
No photos trying to capture everything. No to-do list for tomorrow. Just this feeling. That Vienna is a city you don’t just experience—you feel. And maybe that’s the most beautiful thing about old money Vienna: That it doesn’t try to impress you.
But simply invites you to be a part of it. For a day. Or maybe a little longer.
And that’s precisely the feeling that lingers when the door closes behind me and the city slowly fades into silence. It’s the quiet echo of a day that didn’t need to be anything special to feel extraordinary. Perhaps it’s precisely this kind of elegance that can’t be planned. It simply happens—somewhere between a final glance back and the thought that one could return tomorrow.
