„Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own.“; Schlosspark Laxenburg
There are places that instantly transport you to another mood. Places where everything suddenly slows down. Your mind quiets. And you become a little bit more dreamy. For me, Schlosspark Laxenburg (Laxenburg Palace Park) is exactly that kind of place.
Perhaps it’s because I simply love castles. Or maybe it’s these beautiful gardens, the old paths, the hidden corners, and that very special atmosphere that’s hard to describe. As soon as I walk through a gate and a castle appears somewhere in the distance, my mind automatically starts inventing little stories. What was it like here in the past? Who strolled along these very paths? What clothes did they wear? What conversations did they have?
And yes – perhaps I always feel a little bit like a princess. That’s precisely why I love Schlosspark Laxenburg so much.
A place that feels like
a little journey through time
Even upon arrival, you can sense a different atmosphere here. No stress, no big-city feel, no hectic hustle and bustle.
Instead: nature, ancient walls, towering trees, and the feeling that countless stories have unfolded here. Something I find particularly convenient: parking is free. It might sound like a small detail, but I’ve come to really appreciate it, especially on day trips. No annoying ticket-taking, no searching for parking, no wondering „How long are we staying?“
There’s also a riding arena by the side entrance – and that alone does something for me. Horses and castles simply belong together in my mind. I was a competitive rider myself for many years, and as soon as there’s the smell of stables, riding arenas, or horses nearby, it immediately feels familiar. It fits perfectly with the almost aristocratic feeling that Schlosspark Laxenburg already exudes.
Somehow, I could immediately picture elegant carriages arriving in the past, horses standing ready in their groomed state, and ladies strolling through the avenues in beautiful dresses. Or perhaps I’m just romanticizing it a bit. But honestly – that’s precisely what makes places like this so special.
Between old paths
and dreamy thoughts
What I love most about Schlosspark Laxenburg is the feeling that you never feel the need to hurry.
You just start walking. Without a plan. Without a destination. And suddenly you’ve stopped somewhere again because a view looks beautiful. Because the trees look perfect in the light. Because water is sparkling somewhere. Or because you think to yourself: „Wow, how beautiful this must have been back then?“ I actually imagine that quite often. What it might have been like back then.
Did people have the same thoughts in these very places? Were they happy? Did they perhaps stroll here in love? Or did someone stand at the castle window, gazing at the gardens? Sometimes I find these thoughts almost more beautiful than the place itself. This little escape into daydreams.
This imagining. And that’s precisely what Schlosspark Laxenburg achieves so incredibly well.
These gardens simply have ...
something magical about them
I think everyone has places that instantly evoke a feeling in them.
For some, it’s the sea. For others, mountains. And for me? Definitely: beautiful gardens and castles. It’s hard to explain, but as soon as perfectly manicured paths, old trees, flowers, little hidden corners, and historic buildings come together somewhere, I’m instantly happy. Schlosspark Laxenburg doesn’t feel prim or artificial at all. More like a blend of elegance and ease. As if nature is simply allowed to take its course there, while simultaneously being steeped in history.
Everything feels a little dreamy.
A little romantic. A little like a scene from a movie. And that’s exactly why I love places like this so much. You can walk for hours and still discover something new. A different perspective. A new path. A corner that suddenly looks completely different than before.
It never feels boring. More like a place that has a different atmosphere every time.
Paying an entrance fee
– but somehow it’s worth it
Yes, you have to pay an entrance fee to enter Schlosspark Laxenburg.
I’m usually a little skeptical about parks that charge admission—because you naturally wonder if it’s really worth it. But here, I’d say yes. Especially if you love beautiful places, enjoy walking, or simply want to spend a day that feels a little special. It’s not your typical stroll in the countryside.
It’s more like: Today we’re doing something nice. Something that almost feels like a vacation. Something you don’t do every Sunday. And sometimes you need exactly these kinds of little breaks.
A little refreshment
in the middle of the castle park? Of course!
Of course, we always have to eat at some point.
And quite honestly, for me, stopping for a bite to eat somewhere nice has become almost a must on every lovely outing. Right by the castle, we treated ourselves to a little something to eat – and somehow it just felt like the perfect end to the day. I ordered an Aperol Spritz, and my husband had a Radler (shandy). We both had a schnitzel. Completely classic. Very Austrian. Honestly, it couldn’t have been better.
We sat there, ate, had a few drinks, and simply enjoyed this relaxed day.
And of course, I had to laugh again because I wondered: Did those people actually eat schnitzel here back then? Or would that be completely unhistorical? Somehow, I imagine more opulent banquets, silver cutlery, countless courses, and people who ate far more elegantly than I did with my Aperol in hand. But honestly? I think they might even have liked our lunch.
A place for everyone
who loves beautiful things
Schlosspark Laxenburg isn’t a place I just tick off my list.
Not like, „Okay, seen it, next stop.“ It’s more like a place I’d love to return to. It probably looks different every time, depending on the season. Blooming in spring. Lush green in summer. Probably completely golden in autumn. And even on cooler days, I imagine it’s absolutely beautiful. Especially if you – like me – love castles and simply feel at ease in beautiful places.
It’s one of those places that just does you good. No fuss. No set program. Just breathe. Stroll. Marvel. And briefly forget how noisy everyday life can be. That’s exactly why I think Laxenburg Palace Park is perfect for a relaxing day trip.
my summary
One of the most beautiful places for a dreamy day
If you love castles, beautiful gardens, or simply fancy a day trip where you can briefly escape to another world, then you should definitely check out Schlosspark Laxenburg.
Yes, there is an entrance fee. But in return, you get a place that feels truly special. Free parking. A stunning setting. That stately atmosphere. A riding hall right by the side entrance. Idyllic pathways. Historic vibes.
And the perfect opportunity to feel, for a little while, like the main character in a little fairy tale.
For me, the day there was perfect. A touch of castle romance. A touch of daydreaming. An Aperol Spritz. A schnitzel. And that feeling of simply being somewhere else for a few hours. That’s exactly why I’ll definitely be coming back to Laxenburg Palace Park.
