„Being fascinating isn’t what you’re born with … it’s what you make.“ – Dita Von Teese; Summer Night Ball

invitation

Some evenings are forgotten by the very next morning. And then there are those rare nights that hover somewhere between reality and fantasy—nights that feel as though you’ve stepped into another world for a few hours. Cirque Rouge’s Summer Night Ball at the Palais Auersperg was exactly that kind of night.

Some of you might remember my blog post about the masquerade ball from earlier this year. That event was also organized by Cirque Rouge and marked the debut of this unique concept. When I heard that a Summer Night Ball was coming up, I knew immediately: I wanted to be there again.

After all, if there is one event that blends elegance, art, theater, sensuality, and a touch of the risqué, it is definitely Cirque Rouge. This time, I attended with my husband and my best friend. The inseparable trio. And I can tell you right now: the Summer Night Ball delighted all three of us.

Back at Palais Auersperg

– and yet it feels different every time

It’s actually funny.

It feels like every other event these days takes place at the Palais Auersperg. Yet, the venue manages to feel completely different every single time. At times, it comes across as a classic Viennese palace. At others, like an aristocratic ballroom. And on this particular evening, it felt like a blend of a secret salon, a Victorian fantasy, and modern burlesque. As we walked up the palace steps, for a brief moment, I felt like a character from a historical novel.

Not quite Jane Austen. Not quite *Wuthering Heights*. Somewhere in between. Elegant, slightly dramatic, and with the sense that something unexpected might be waiting behind every door. That is exactly what makes Cirque Rouge so special to me.

You don’t just attend an event. You step into another world.

And in my opinion, that is precisely what a good midsummer ball should achieve.

Photos first

and Aperol later

As always, of course, we had to take photos first.

Anyone who knows me knows that, by now, this is just as much a part of the evening as the event itself. And let’s be honest: when you’re in a palace with a setting like this, doing anything else would be almost negligent. So, pictures came first. The lighting was perfect. The mood was relaxed. And there weren’t crowds of people everywhere just yet. No sooner had we finished than we went our separate ways for a brief moment. The guys did exactly what men usually do first at events. They headed to the bar.

And me?

I couldn’t suppress my curiosity. So I did something I absolutely love doing. I set off on my own. A walk through every room. A chance to see everything. A moment to soak up the atmosphere before the big crowds arrived. I love those moments. When not every room is completely packed yet. When the artists are making their final preparations. When you still get that fleeting feeling of being allowed a glimpse behind the scenes.

You could actually get a pretty good idea of what was going to happen in each room. Perhaps a bit more signage here and there would have been nice, but honestly? Palais Auersperg is so impressive in its own right that it doesn’t really need much extra decoration. You can always find something to complain about if you look for it. But I thought it was simply beautiful.

What do you actually wear?

– to a midsummer night’s ball

I have to admit, the question of what to wear took up more of my time than I expected. After all, a „Summer Night’s Ball“ sounds dreamy, but it leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Images of English country estates, *Pride and Prejudice*, *Wuthering Heights*, and romantic summer nights were floating around in my mind.

Anyone familiar with my style knows that I tend to lean towards elegance anyway. I love classic silhouettes. I love feminine dresses.

And I love looks that don’t need to be loud to stand out. That’s why I chose a long white dress with lace detailing on the back, a form-fitting silhouette, and a small train. It was exactly the kind of dress I feel comfortable in. The boys were perfectly dressed, too. Blue, white, and beige dominated their outfits. These are, in fact, the very colors one imagines for a summer night’s ball. And I was finally able to celebrate a small personal victory that evening.

After months of persuasion, I finally bought my husband a linen shirt. It was something he had resisted for a surprisingly long time. Honestly, I wonder why now. Because there couldn’t have been a better choice for a summer night’s ball.

Between Dress Code

and Viennese Idiosyncrasy

The guests were at least as exciting as the shows.

After all, despite a clearly communicated dress code, interpretations varied widely. Some looked as if they had stepped straight out of a *Vogue* shoot. Others were more reminiscent of characters from a fantasy novel. And some opted for full-blown costumes. Which, in itself, looked pretty cool. However, it had been explicitly stated beforehand that costumes were not desired.

That’s Vienna for you.

Here, rules tend to be viewed as inspiration rather than strict mandates. What really struck me positively, though, was this: Hardly anyone looked like they had just stumbled in by accident. Everyone had put thought into their look. Everyone had made an effort. Everyone wanted to be part of the evening. And for me, that makes a huge difference. When the guests become part of the spectacle, a truly special atmosphere emerges naturally.

What particularly struck me, compared to the Masquerade Ball, was this: Cirque Rouge has clearly learned a thing or two. And I mean that in a truly positive sense. The entire event felt more structured. Better thought-out. More professional. The bar, in particular, was excellently organized this time around. Anyone who has attended large events knows the problem: You feel like you spend half the evening waiting in line. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case at all at the Summer Night Ball. The bar was well-staffed. The staff worked quickly. And everything ran smoothly.

That meant there was more time for what really mattered— namely, enjoying the evening. Hats off to Cirque Rouge. After all, good organization is usually only noticed when it’s missing.

The opening ceremony

was simply spectacular

Let’s move on to the absolute highlight of the evening: the opening ceremony.

It had already been impressive at the masquerade ball, but for this year’s Summer Night Ball, Cirque Rouge really stepped things up a notch. The show began almost immediately.

No long waits. No unnecessary interruptions. The action kicked off right away, and the atmosphere in the hall was electric from the very first moment. I already had a rough idea of what to expect, whereas my best friend had absolutely no clue. And that’s exactly what made it even more fun. The look on his face during those first few minutes was priceless— a mix of awe, excitement, and sheer surprise. A series of acts followed one another, each more spectacular than the last: acrobatics, dance, performance art, theater.

And, of course, burlesque was part of the mix. For me, that blend is precisely what makes Cirque Rouge so special. It’s never just a show; it’s a complete experience.

Burlesque, acrobatics,

and countless surprises

Throughout the evening, there was a constant succession of new program highlights.

And that is precisely what makes a good summer night ball. You don’t simply sit at a table. You discover. You experience. You move through the rooms. Always on the lookout for the next highlight.

The various shows were spread across the entire palace. And new surprises awaited at every turn. The burlesque elements, in particular, were once again beautifully staged. Elegant. Artistic. Sensual. Never cheap. Never crude. That is exactly how I envision modern burlesque. Art rather than provocation. Aesthetics rather than clichés.

The Kinky Room

– one of the most exciting rooms of the evening

I was particularly curious about the so-called „Kinky Room.“

The name alone naturally grabs your attention. And indeed, this room was one of the most exciting parts of the entire Summer Night Ball. A pole took center stage there. The performers delivered an incredible show.

Strength. Elegance. Precision. All at once. No matter how often I see performances like this, I am impressed every single time. Because what looks so effortless is, in reality, an incredible feat of physical prowess. Naturally, there were also several burlesque moments that fit perfectly with the atmosphere of Cirque Rouge.

A short summer break

n the inner courtyard

Another pleasant surprise was the outdoor area.

This time, we were allowed to use at least a small, cordoned-off section of the inner courtyard. And given the temperatures, that was worth its weight in gold. After all, Vienna was experiencing one of its hottest spells that evening. Stepping outside briefly between shows to get some fresh air and leave the hustle and bustle behind for a moment was incredibly refreshing. For me, a bit of summer air is simply an essential part of a summer night ball.

If I had one small suggestion for improvement, it would perhaps be a slightly more detailed overview map. While there was a large overview of the program schedule at the start, it wasn’t always immediately clear exactly where each room was located. Especially at a Summer Night Ball, you naturally want to catch as many parts of the program as possible.

On the other hand, that was part of the charm. You discovered rooms by chance. You stumbled upon shows. You found things you hadn’t even been looking for. And perhaps that is precisely part of the Cirque Rouge concept. It felt like there were hundreds of people there, yet everyone had a different experience. Everyone saw different performances. Everyone discovered different rooms. Everyone took home different memories.

my summary

The older I get, the more I appreciate experiences like these.

Not because they are perfect. Not because everything always runs smoothly. But because they take us out of our everyday lives for a few hours. For a few hours, no one thinks about emails.

No one thinks about appointments. No one thinks about unfinished to-do lists. Instead, you sit with the people you love in a palace in the heart of Vienna, watching burlesque shows, admiring performers, laughing together, and immersing yourself in a world that doesn’t actually exist. And perhaps that is precisely why I love returning to Cirque Rouge events. Because they remind me that life isn’t just about work, obligations, and the daily grind.

„Some places you visit. Some evenings you experience. And some nights carry a little piece of magic with them long after they’re over.“

Sometimes, life is allowed to be mysterious.

Sometimes, it’s allowed to be a little risqué.

Sometimes, you’re allowed to be someone else for a few hours.

When we left the palace late at night, I was tired. My feet ached. My hair had long since given up the fight against the summer heat. But at the same time, I was happy. Happy to have been there. Happy to have shared that evening with my husband and my best friend. And happy to have once again immersed myself in the mysterious world of Cirque Rouge. For the most beautiful nights are often not the loudest ones. They are the ones that feel like a beautiful secret, even days later.
