„Sustainable fashion is not a trend but the future.“ – Antonia Böhlke, Triest Outfits

Actually, the plan was quite clear: blue and white. Maritime, light, Italian-inspired—that’s how I imagined my outfits for our short trip to Trieste. A bit of Riviera feeling, a bit of Dolce Vita, a bit of Pinterest vibes. And then came… the weather. Rain. Wind. Sun. Then more wind. And yes, rain again. Welcome to the Adriatic Coast in its most unpredictable version.

But anyone who knows me knows: Black is always Plan B – and usually Plan A too. I feel like I own more black items than all other colors combined, and although I regularly try to pack a little more color in my suitcase, dark elegance usually wins out in the end. Luckily, I must say. Because Trieste turned out to be one of those cities where you want to stroll through the streets in style, even in the rain. And that’s exactly what I did. With a few blue and white highlights, of course.

Day 1:

All Black Everything – but with ballerina flats

Our first evening in Trieste was warm, slightly humid—and completely rain-free. Finally, a moment where I could wear my black strappy dress. Long, flowing, a little playful—the perfect piece to switch straight into vacation mode. I paired it with flat ballet flats that somehow seemed French, even though they were Italian. And my hair? Loose, dancing in the wind—no effort, but with maximum effect. This dress is like a reset button for me. As soon as I wear it, I know: I’ve arrived. The vacation can begin.

Day 2:

White lightness meets brown grounding

On Friday, I wanted to give the original mood board plans another chance. And I’m glad I did. My outfit consisted of a long white cotton skirt—with a beautiful drape and a hint of nostalgia—and a cropped oversized top, also in white. The play with proportions makes this outfit special, even though the color scheme actually looks very simple. I paired it with flat brown leather shoes, which I pair with almost everything these days, and my new Marc Jacobs glasses. The latter were not only a visual highlight, but also urgently needed—at least until the afternoon.

Then the rain came…

Because then the rain came. And with it: changing clothes, rethinking, layering. I chose my black maxi dress in a slightly sturdier fabric. It sits comfortably on the body, but is robust enough to survive an unexpected rain shower without drama. I paired it with my ballet flats with a slight platform – ideal for wet cobblestones – and my dark green trench coat, which immediately had a cinematic feel. A look for a film scene in the rain – or for dinner in Trieste in bad weather. Gold accessories were a must: subtle earrings, a ring, a bracelet. Enough to sparkle but not to shout.

Day 3:

Princess Vibes & Practical Legroom

Saturday was our day at the seaside. And that meant Miramare Castle. When you enter this place, you immediately understand why you want to imagine it in pastel colors. And yes—I had the perfect dress with me. A long, light blue gown, flowing and airy, that felt like a scene from a fairytale with every step. I could have worn a tiara, but my simple updo did the trick. This dress was feminine without being kitschy. Just right for a day with sea views, historical flair, and too much beauty to take in all at once.

I changed again…

In the afternoon, I changed again – this time for practical reasons. Walks, sightseeing, sea breeze: I wanted more freedom of movement. My dark blue short dress was perfect for this. It had structure, but was still comfortable – and showed just enough leg to still feel the summer. Combined with simple sandals and a thin cardigan, I was ready for every corner of this city – whether piazza or harbor.

Last evening:

Satin dreams from Trieste

My highlight? Absolutely: last night’s look. I bought a dress in Trieste that I’ll remember forever. Long, made of satin, incredibly elegant – and with a waterfall neckline at the front and back. A little too sexy for the office, but just right for a balmy summer evening. I put my hair up because you just have to show off that back. I wore subtle accessories with it – a simple necklace, small hoop earrings, a gold bracelet. The focus was entirely on the dress. And I love it when a dress has so much character that it takes over the room.

This outfit was a little closing moment for me. It wasn’t planned, wasn’t part of the mood board—and yet it felt like the fashion essence of this trip. Maybe because it came from Trieste. Maybe because it just fit at that moment. Or maybe because fashion is best when it happens spontaneously.

Conclusion:

Plan B is often better than Plan A

I’ll never be the one who sticks to a single color palette. And I’ll never be the one who plans every outfit in detail. This trip has shown me once again that for me, fashion is first and foremost a feeling—and that black, as inconspicuous as it sometimes seems, is always my safe haven. But I’ve also learned how nice it is to let go sometimes and let a white skirt or a light blue dress take over the mood.

Trieste wasn’t always kind to the weather—but it was very kind to my wardrobe. And honestly? That’s exactly how I like it.
