There are two things you need at the Vienna Film Festival 2026: patience and luck. Patience when queuing, and luck when looking for a seat. The latter sometimes feels like an Olympic event; the moment someone stands up, people come rushing from three different directions, all hoping to snag that very table. And yet, I come back every year.
For me, the Vienna Film Festival 2026 is just as much a part of summer as an Aperol Spritz or that first night you can stroll through the city without a jacket. There are simply places that feel like an integral part of a Viennese summer, and for me, this is one of them.
This time, a very special evening was on the agenda: *Mamma Mia*.
And anyone who knows me probably already realizes that I said yes to that immediately.

That evening, I was out again with my husband and my best friend—a trio that has attended quite a few events in Vienna together by now.
The mood was already great on the way to the Vienna Film Festival. The temperatures were pleasant, the sun was slowly setting, and crowds of people were streaming toward Rathausplatz. One thing that immediately caught my eye was that the Aperol area had been significantly expanded this year. You can usually spot the orange Aperol world from a distance, but this time everything seemed even bigger, more eye-catching, and more summery. The problem?
Snagging a seat there is about as likely as winning the lottery. I’m not exaggerating.
Anyone who has been to the Vienna Film Festival knows exactly what I mean. Seating is practically a currency of its own here; the moment a table opens up, it feels like five people are already poised to claim it. That might sound dramatic, but it’s actually part of the charm.
Aperol for me

Before we went looking for a place to sit, we naturally needed something to drink.
I opted—unsurprisingly—for an Aperol Spritz. My best friend tried a Salti Spritz, and my husband chose a beer. We did notice something interesting about that, though. Beer was actually available at only one single stand: the Ottakringer stand.
In a city like Vienna, where beer feels like an absolute staple, I found that surprising, to be honest. While we were getting our drinks, I watched the lively bustle surrounding the Vienna Film Festival. There were people with cameras, tourists with city maps, elegant Viennese women in summer dresses, families with children, and groups of friends who had clearly come straight from work. It’s exactly that mix that I love.
What I love most about the Vienna Film Festival is people-watching. Vienna is a city full of contrasts, and this is exactly where they all converge. You see tourists in summer dresses sitting next to businesspeople who have clearly come straight from the office. Groups of young friends snap photos for Instagram, while a few tables away, older Viennese women calmly hold their ground at their regular spots. Sometimes, I feel like you see more different kinds of people in a single evening than you would in a whole week otherwise.

Once we had our drinks, the mission to find a seat began. And as it turned out, we were in luck. We found a table with plenty of space. Since available seats are scarce, we noticed two older ladies from Germany who were also looking for a place to sit. So, we invited them to join us. For me, moments like these are quintessential Vienna. You strike up a conversation, swap experiences, and suddenly hear fascinating stories.
The two ladies told us that they had actually extended their stay specifically for the Vienna Film Festival2026 . And even better: They travel to Vienna every year for it. Every single year. It made me chuckle, because as a local, I sometimes forget just how special certain events actually are. To me, the Vienna Film Festival 2026 is just part of the scenery. For others, it is a genuine reason to travel here.

Those two ladies reminded me of something, though. We Viennese often forget just how special our own city really is. We take the City Hall for granted. The Vienna Film Festival 2026, too. And the Ringstraße. It is only when you speak to people who travel here specifically for these things that you realize that many aspects of our everyday lives are something truly special to others.
The big question of the evening:
What are we eating?
Naturally, hunger eventually set in.
And that’s not exactly an easy thing to deal with at the Vienna Film Festival. After all, the selection is huge. There are stalls that have been there for years and have practically achieved cult status by now. At the same time, new concepts are added every year. So, I did what I usually do. I set off on a solo scouting mission. My husband and my best friend stayed at the table while I walked around the entire site.
By the way, a big advantage of the Vienna Film Festival 2026 on weekdays is that you can still move around reasonably well. Don’t get me wrong. It’s crowded on weekdays, too. Very crowded. But on the weekend, the whole thing reaches a completely different level. Honestly, I don’t even know if that’s possible. But somehow, Vienna manages it every year.
After making the rounds, I decided pretty quickly. I wanted to go to Los Loco. Why?
Because the stand immediately reminded me of our trip to New York. We ate at Los Tacos there, and ever since, tacos have held a special place in my heart. Plus, I remembered having incredibly good tacos at that exact spot during the Vienna Film Festival about two years ago. So, naturally, I had to try them again. I ordered chicken tacos. And nachos with cheese and guacamole to go with them. And since it’s summer, a frozen strawberry margarita was a must, of course.

but that’s not what you’d expect
Let’s put it this way: It wasn’t cheap.
But that probably comes as no surprise to anyone. To be honest, though, the tacos impressed me a lot more two years ago. Maybe it was the memory, or perhaps the hype I’d built up in my head. This time they were good, but not the kind of „Oh my God, I have to come back right away“ good. Still, for me, it was a little slice of New York right in the middle of Vienna, and for that reason alone, I didn’t regret the decision.
The staff behind the counter seemed a bit stressed and slightly overwhelmed that evening. Something I can certainly understand, given the crowds. Still, I love evenings just like this. You sit right in the middle of the Vienna Film Festival, people-watch, have a cold drink, and simply enjoy the moment. Sometimes it’s not about finding the best food in the city. Sometimes it’s simply about the atmosphere.
While I was eating my tacos, my best friend sprang into action again. He spotted a steak stand and brought us a sandwich and loaded fries to go with them. And that’s where the real adventure began. Those fries were so salty that my first reaction was: „It’s like eating the ocean.“ I think that sums it up pretty well.
My husband laughed. My best friend did too. But honestly?
I’m not exaggerating. Still, there were some upsides. The cheddar cheese sauce was really good. The roasted onions were, too. And the jalapeños? They were brutally hot. So hot that I briefly questioned my life choices. Luckily, there were plenty of drinks. The frozen mango mojitos, in particular, were a total lifesaver. Fruity, ice-cold, and just the thing for a warm summer evening.
The moment I realized
I had misunderstood Mamma Mia
Eventually, it was time for the main event of the evening. Mamma Mia.
And now for a little confession. I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Yes, I knew Mamma Mia was on the bill. Yes, I knew that was the reason we had come to the Vienna Film Festival 2026. But I hadn’t checked exactly how the evening would unfold.
I had actually assumed it would be more like a concert. Perhaps with live singing. Maybe a tribute show. Something along those lines. Instead, they actually screened the movie. Granted, it was a special version—an edit featuring primarily the musical numbers—but still. It really was Mamma Mia. The movie. And I sat there, genuinely surprised.
If my husband reads this blog post, he’ll probably roll his eyes for the fifth time.
Because he knows exactly what I’m like. And here’s a fun fact about me: I have an incredible knack for finding great things. But when it comes to the details, I’m sometimes a bit… flexible. I knew it was going to be a *Mamma Mia* night. I knew we were going to the Vienna Film Festival 2026. I knew it would be lovely. Apparently, I didn’t need any more information than that.
What time exactly it started? Didn’t check. What the program looked like? Didn’t check. Movie or concert? Didn’t check. After all, you have to focus on the important things. I’m in charge of the aesthetics. My husband handles the details. Hahaha.

People from all over the world sit together at long tables, drinking Aperol Spritz, discussing movies, and enjoying a summer evening right in the heart of the city.
And as I write this blog post, I already know that I’ll be sitting there again next year. Probably with an Aperol in hand. Probably with my husband and my best friend. And, in all likelihood, without having read the details beforehand.
Some things just never change.
