Almwellness Hotel Pierer – spa heaven in the mountains

„Wellness is not a „medical fix“ but a way of living“- Greg Anderson; Almwellness Hotel Pierer

There are places you visit, take a few photos of, return home from, and forget within a few weeks. And then there are places that stay with you—places where, even days later, you find yourself thinking about the pool, the breakfast, the conversations on the balcony, and that very special feeling of finally having absolutely no obligations.

The Almwellness Hotel Pierer was exactly that kind of place for my mom and me.

For our girls‘ wellness weekend, we made a conscious decision not to fly to the coast, skip the city break, and avoid any tightly packed itinerary. We simply wanted to relax. Sleep. Eat. Talk. Laugh. And the Almwellness Hotel Pierer was the perfect choice for exactly that.

Located just about two hours from Vienna, the Almwellness Hotel Pierer sits high up on the Teichalm in Styria—a place where the air feels fresher, people seem more relaxed, and you suddenly realize just how noisy your everyday life has actually become.

The Arrival:

Why every curve is worth it

Let’s start with the only part of the weekend that made my mom and me a little nervous: the journey there.

The drive to the Almwellness Hotel Pierer is generally straightforward. Much of the route is via the motorway and an easy drive. However, the final few kilometers are a different story. Suddenly, the roads narrow. The curves get tighter. And the mountains loom higher. It feels like you’re driving up three separate mountains before you even reach the Almwellness Hotel Pierer. More than once, we hoped no car would be coming the other way around the next bend. While the roads are perfectly navigable, they are definitely not for anyone who dislikes heights or narrow mountain roads.

But the view at the top makes every meter worth it. You really notice just how high up the Almwellness Hotel Pierer is situated. At one point, we even experienced that familiar sensation of pressure in our ears—the kind you usually associate with flying.

And that is exactly what makes it so special. You are truly away from it all—not just geographically, but mentally, too.

First impression:

Large, stylish, and surprisingly full of nooks and crannies.

Upon arrival at the hotel, we were immediately given a friendly welcome.

There is plenty of parking available at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer—a detail that is often underestimated but incredibly convenient, especially at wellness hotels. After checking in, we were given a brief tour of the property. And believe me: that tour served a real purpose.

The Almwellness Hotel Pierer is significantly larger than it appears at first glance.

From the outside, everything looks compact. However, as soon as you walk down the first few corridors, you quickly realize that there is another area waiting around every corner: new hallways, additional relaxation rooms, more wellness zones, and little nooks tucked away here and there. Of course, we got lost anyway. Once. Maybe one-and-a-half times. But that is precisely what gives the place its charm. The Almwellness Hotel Pierer doesn’t feel like a typical hotel complex; instead, it feels more like a small village spread across different levels.

The Hotel:

Where Interior Design Meets Coziness

There are hotels that are luxurious. There are hotels that are cozy. And then there are hotels that manage to be both at the same time.

The Almwellness HotelPierer definitely falls into that third category. Within just a few minutes, it becomes clear that the design was planned with great attention to detail. Warm wood tones everywhere. Natural materials. Atmospheric lighting. Tasteful décor. And, above all, a consistent theme that runs throughout the entire property. I love hotels that don’t just look beautiful, but where you can tell real thought has gone into the design.

At the Almwellness Hotel Pierer, everything simply comes together. Nothing feels random. Nothing feels cluttered. It is cozy and high-end, yet pleasantly understated. You can tell right away that an interior designer was at work here.

Our room:

Cozy, thoughtfully designed and perfect for two

After the tour, we headed straight to our room. The positive impression continued there, too. The room was spacious, very clean, and just the right size for two people. The bed particularly caught our eye.

It is unusually high, creating the feeling of sleeping in a small chalet. Personally, I found the pillow a bit too flat. But the Almwellness Hotel Pierer has a solution for that as well; you can easily get different pillows. It’s a small detail that shows just how much attention is paid to comfort here. Our personal highlight, however, was the balcony. We sat there every evening. Chatted. Laughed. Reflected on the day.

And looking back, those conversations are among my fondest memories of the entire weekend.

Lunch time

– with a view

We booked the all-inclusive package at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer. Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. And I can say right now: absolutely no one goes hungry here.

Lunch is served buffet-style in the restaurant area. I’m usually rather critical of hotel buffets. Too often, they look impressive but taste merely average. At the Almwellness Hotel Pierer, it was a different story. Here, you can tell that quality matters more than sheer quantity. The selection was extensive but not overwhelming. Everything felt well-thought-out.

Fresh. Regional. And, above all, high-quality.

There was everything from Prosecco and a variety of salads to hot dishes. And, of course, you encounter Styria’s most famous culinary icon everywhere: pumpkin seed oil. As a spread. As a dressing. Drizzled over egg dishes. At times, it felt as though pumpkin seed oil was practically a religion here. Our favorite spots were definitely on the panoramic terrace. Everything simply tastes a little better with a view of the surrounding mountains.

Mom & Me:

Styria’s most chaotic wellness duo

Anyone watching the two of us must have drawn their own conclusions. After all, my mom and I make for a wonderfully chaotic duo.

Fun fact: I have poor distance vision, while my mom struggles to see things up close. In everyday life, this means we practically need each other. She spots the tiniest details on the horizon and sees things that are miles away from my perspective. It’s not for nothing that I sometimes affectionately call her my „Eagle.“ On the flip side, I’m the one who deciphers all the menus, price lists, and fine print. It works surprisingly well when we’re out and about together.

On top of that, my mom is an incredibly extroverted person. She talks to everyone—truly everyone—whether it’s in the elevator, at breakfast, or by the pool. I, on the other hand, am polite but much more reserved. For one thing, I often don’t spot people in time as they approach me, and for another, I usually just enjoy the peace and quiet while on vacation. Yin and Yang, basically. And that’s probably exactly why we work so well together.

The general spa area:

relaxation with a view

After lunch, it was time for us to put on our bikinis, throw on our bathrobes, and head to the wellness area.

The spa area at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer is spacious. There is an indoor pool. An outdoor pool. A large whirlpool. Several quiet rooms. Various relaxation areas. And little details everywhere that show real thought has gone into the design. I particularly liked the snack stations.

They offer water, tea, nuts, and dried fruit. For me, it is precisely these little touches that make for a perfect wellness day. The pool area itself has a modern, high-end feel. The architecture is clean and uncluttered. The loungers are modern. Everything feels calm and well-maintained. Despite its size, the Almwellness Hotel Pierer manages never to feel overcrowded.

The natural swimming pond

and the sauna area

While the main pool area has a rather modern feel, the atmosphere shifts completely at the natural swimming pond.

Suddenly, you feel like you’re in another world. More romantic. Closer to nature. Almost fairytale-like. The wooden loungers blend perfectly into the landscape. Admittedly, they weren’t the most comfortable loungers I’ve ever used. But visually, they are stunning. The sauna area of the Almwellness Hotel Pierer is located right behind them.

My mom isn’t much of a sauna-goer, and honestly, I didn’t want to go alone. So, I skipped the saunas this time. Of course, I still had to explore the whole area. There are various saunas, several relaxation zones, and regular infusion sessions. The panoramic sauna seems to be particularly popular. It was busy every time I walked past. There is also a small whirlpool here that has been perfectly integrated into the sauna landscape.

The "Milchbar":

Arguably the most charming name in the hotel

Can we talk about that name for a moment?

Milchbar = Milk bar.

I love it.

The Milchbar at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer was the perfect spot for us to enjoy an afternoon Aperol. You can order snacks there, too. We never actually got around to doing that, though. We were always so full after our meals that even looking at the menu was a purely theoretical exercise. What really stood out to me here was the service. After just a short time, the waiter knew our room number.

He knew what we liked to drink. And even where we preferred to lounge. As a result, our drinks were often brought straight to our loungers. On top of that, a staff member would regularly stop by to ask if we needed anything else. It’s moments like these that stay with you.

The massages:

Painfully good

For me, a massage is as essential to a wellness weekend as an Aperol Spritz is to summer. So, I booked a personalized 50-minute massage for both my mom and myself. It was the best decision.

While my mom preferred a gentler version, I opted for something more intense.

My back. My shoulder blades. My shins. Everything was worked on. And thoroughly, too. During the treatment, my masseur warned me that I would likely experience some muscle soreness afterward. He was right. Even so, the treatment was fantastic. We chatted the whole time, and suddenly, the fifty minutes were up. Sometimes, it is precisely these kinds of encounters that make a stay feel even more personal.

The yoga room

with the hotel’s most beautiful view

One area I simply have to mention is the yoga room at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer.

The funny thing is, we had already managed to get lost before we even found it. You see, the room is located on the second basement level, but the elevator only goes down to the first basement level. Makes perfect sense, right? Fortunately, we ran into an incredibly nice staff member who noticed us wandering around looking a bit confused and showed us the way.

And it was worth it. The yoga room had—by far—the best view in the entire hotel.

Big windows. A view of the greenery. Absolute peace and quiet. Almost every spot was taken, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxed. I was particularly impressed by a few older ladies who were participating with such enthusiasm and agility. I sat there thinking: hats off to them. The class itself was intentionally gentle, designed to energize the body for the day ahead. It was perfect for my mom.

For me—someone who usually does strength training and Reformer Pilates—it could have been a bit more challenging. But that wasn’t really the point. The point was to start the day mindfully. And for that, the session was perfect.

Breakfast at the Hotel Pierer

The best way to start the day

For me, breakfast is the most important meal of a vacation.

And the breakfast at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer really impressed me. The selection was huge. Fresh pastries. Egg dishes. Spreads. Fruit. Muesli. Regional specialties. Pumpkin seed oil, of course. And Prosecco, naturally.

Everything was high-quality and beautifully presented. I particularly appreciated that, despite the hotel’s size, there was never any chaos. It was quiet. Relaxed. And that is exactly how breakfast on a wellness holiday should be.

Lake Teichalmsee:

A walk that’s part of the experience

After breakfast, we took a walk to Lake Teichalmsee.

It takes about fifteen minutes from the Almwellness Hotel Pierer. The path leads slightly downhill and is perfect for a short post-meal stroll. Naturally, we took touristy photos. Naturally, we visited the playground. And naturally, we had to go on the swings.

Sometimes we adults forget that having fun has nothing to do with age. We are often far too hard on ourselves. Too sensible. Too busy. And that is exactly why I love moments like these. Just laughing. Being silly. Swinging with my mom. And forgetting, for an hour, just how serious life can be sometimes.

Dinner experience:

The perfect end to a wellness day

Dinner at the Almwellness Hotel Pierer was a highlight every evening.

A multi-course menu is served: Salad. Appetizer. Soup. Main course. Dessert. And cheese afterwards. At least in theory. In practice, I never made it as far as the cheese. I was completely full every single time. For me, dinner is always one of the best parts of a wellness holiday.

You come fresh from your room. You’ve spruced yourself up. You put on something nice. And you enjoy the evening. That was exactly the atmosphere at the Almwellnessresort Pierer, too. Many guests seemed to feel the same way. Although, looking at some of the outfits, I did wonder if those people even realized which hotel they were in. I encounter this phenomenon surprisingly often. But my mom and I didn’t let that affect us. We got dressed up every evening. Simply because it’s fun.

I particularly liked that the restaurant is divided into several areas. This makes the space feel much more spread out and prevents it from ever feeling crowded. My mom and I sat in the conservatory during our stay. And I don’t think we could have asked for a better spot. It was bright, quiet, and pleasant. Soft music played in the background. People conversed in hushed tones. No one was loud. No one was in a rush. Everything felt harmonious. That is exactly how I picture a perfect wellness evening.

my summary:

Why we will come back

The Almwellnessr Hotel Pierer gave my mom and me exactly what we were looking for.

Peace and quiet. Time. Relaxation. Good food.

And, above all, shared memories. Of course, I could tell you all about the pools or the relaxation rooms again. But honestly, it’s the little moments that stick with me. The conversations on the balcony. Getting lost while looking for the yoga room. Swinging together at the playground. The many hours spent simply talking and laughing. No schedules. No obligations. No stress.

For us, the value for money was absolutely worth it. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Even my mom—who is usually much more critical about these kinds of things—was thrilled. That alone really says it all. So, if you’re looking for a wellness hotel where you can truly switch off, you should definitely check out the Almwellness Hotel Pierer. We’re pretty sure we’ll be coming back. Maybe even this winter. After all, if Teichalm is this beautiful in the summer, I’d love to see what the Almwellnessresort Pierer looks like when everything outside is covered in snow.

And honestly? I’m already looking forward to it.
